5G is Driving Mobile Edge Computing

Integrated Application Hosting (IAH) with Extreme Fabric Automation enables best in class 5G Cloud-Native Solution

New bandwidth-intensive applications, such as IoT, Artificial Reality, and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) driving the need for ultralow latency and pushing localized data and compute resources to the network edge.

For Mobile Service Providers (MSPs), edge computing is an evolution of cloud computing and brings application hosting from a centralized data center down to the network edge, closer to the enterprise and consumer, and the data generated by applications. Edge computing is acknowledged as one of the key pillars for meeting the demanding Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of 5G, especially as far as low latency and bandwidth efficiency are concerned.

Let’s go back to networking basics: A new cloud-native infrastructure builds the foundation for 5G innovation and needs a robust and secure network infrastructure that is based on IP fabric technology – it’s essentially an edge fabric for each mini data center deployed remotely or consolidated within traditional data centers within the mobile operator’s network.

In a recent interview with SDXCentral, our CEO Ed Meyercord talked about how Extreme is going to be in a strong position because of the cloud-native edge network and compute capability and how it is infinitely scalable, more flexible and it provides the ability to turn up and break down service and software delivery much faster than traditional technologies.

MSPs like Verizon are discussing the differences between MEC (Multi Access Edge) and the 5G Edge and deliver mobile edge computing that enable for developers an application framework for wireless edge devices that require low latency. MEC is the widely accepted standard of edge computing that places compute and storage resources at the edge of the network, close to end-users. You can find more information in this document published by Verizon.

If we dig further into the underlying network, integrated fabric automation for day 0 (setup and configuration of the network elements) and day 1 (moves, adds, changes) and day 2 (on-going maintenance and operations) are a must-have for every MSP.

At Extreme Networks, we offer our Extreme Fabric Automation (EFA) solution that runs in our switches and routers. We leverage a Guest VM architecture that is independent of the network operating system. This unique architecture is based on Integrated Application Hosting (IAH) and delivers the industry’s most advanced, fully automated, and software-defined IP Fabric solution on the market.

Naturally, such a complex solution cannot be delivered from one company, it requires many solutions to work in tandem and make a cloud-native infrastructure solution a reality for mobile operators.

Please check out our 5G Mobile Edge Computing Solution Brief where we describe the power of the Extreme Networks IP Fabric solution in combination with EFA and how it enables value to large mobile operators that have existing distributed sites – large and small – where various equipment is placed to provide connectivity across rural, suburban areas and cities.
