5G and The Future of Robotic Surgery

Brendan Bonner Innovation Lead, Office of the CTO Publicado 2 May 2024

In a previous blog, my colleague, Doug McDonald, wrote about the ways in which 5G cellular technology can revolutionize healthcare. One of the areas he covered was robotic surgery, which involves using robotic systems to perform minimally invasive surgeries that streamline the surgical process, improve safety, and reduce complications.

Indeed, one of the most exciting applications of 5G technology is in the field of robotic surgery. The robotic surgery market is currently worth more than $3 billion and is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. Current robotic surgeries require the surgeon to be near the patient while controlling the robot via a monitor. But with 5G’s low latency, surgeons will be able to perform remote procedures that are currently impossible due to geographic constraints or critical timing requirements, such as trauma/accident injuries requiring operative procedures in ambulances and war zones.

Moreover, haptic data, a technology that allows tactile information to be received through sensations by applying forces, vibrations, or touches, can be uploaded to the Internet, and experienced by trainees in the operating room. This will improve surgical training and education.

5G technology will also improve telehealth visits by allowing physical exams to be performed between physicians and patients all over the world via a mobile connection. This has the potential to democratize high-level care for patients worldwide while also aiding in the resolution of some of the world’s most difficult challenges.

To provide a more visual representation of this topic, we have created a video that explores the intersection of 5G technology and the future of robotic surgery:

Thanks to technological advancements, robotic surgery is no longer a fantasy found only in science fiction movies and comic books; it is now a reality. We invite you to watch our video to learn more about this exciting advancement in the field of healthcare.
